"PPPP chief Fahim may move SC over Zardari's interference in party affairs" Print E-mail
Monday, 17 March 2008
Islamabad, Mar 17 (ANI): PPP Parliamentarians (PPPP) president and PM-hopeful Makhdoom Amin Fahim might move the Supreme Court to stop PPP Co-chairman Asif Zardari from "interfering in party affairs", his party sources have said.

The pro-Fahim sources reportedly said that he would not compromise and would approach either the Supreme Court or the Election Commission of Pakistan against Zardari, who was neither an MNA nor an office-bearer of the PPPP.

According to them, the PPP of which Asif Zardari is the co-chairman is not registered with the Election Commission, and that it was the PPPP, headed by Makhdoom Amin Fahim, that contested the elections and won the most number of seats.

Meanwhile, sources in the Zardari camp said that Makhdoom was no more in the race for prime minister. They said Yousaf Raza Gilani was the frontrunner for the office of prime minister and Dr Fehmida Mirza for the Speaker of the National Assembly.

"I don't think Fahim is in the race for prime minister. I guess Yousaf Raza Gilani and Fehmida Mirza are frontrunners for prime minister and speaker," the Daily Times quoted a senior office-bearer and close aide of Zardari, as saying.

The party had authorised the co-chairman to nominate the candidates for these offices, he said. "He will announce the names of speaker and deputy speaker today (Monday) but I am not sure when he will announce the premiership candidate."

Meanwhile, PPP information secretary and former journalist Sherry Rehman, who is considered close to the Zardari-Bhutto family, is seen as the front runner for the cabinet berth of foreign minister in the new PPP-PML-N alliance federal government.

Sherry, an MNA-elect, was sent by PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari to Washington after Benazir Bhutto's assassination to meet diplomats and members of the Bush administration to explain her party's position on various issues.

This indicated the level of confidence that Zardari has in her abilities to handle such matters. She also served as a member of the last National Assembly's Committee on Foreign Relations, reported the Daily Times.

According to the paper, Sherry is also interested in the FM slot rather than running the Information Ministry, which she was earlier tipped to get.

Meanwhile, another senior PPP leader former foreign minister and MNA-elect Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali is also being considered for the next foreign minister slot.

Ali is said to be very keen on it again. To his credit, he defeated Khurshid Kasuri, the former PMLQ FM of Pakistan, in the February 18 elections, added the paper. (ANI)
