Prachanda fears disintegration of Nepal Print E-mail
Sunday, 13 July 2008

Kathmandu, July 12 (ANI): Maoist Chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal alias 'Prachanda' has warned that Nepal could head towards disintegration if it does not stick to the path of consensus politics to prevent such an upheaval.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Prachanda said, "Political parties should work together until the new constitution is written, otherwise the country could head towards disintegration".

"The post of president and chairman of Constituent Assembly should not become a component of power sharing," he said added that, "Power sharing means sharing of ministerial posts."

He also expressed dissatisfaction over the remarks made by leaders of the Madhes-based parties in the Constituent Assembly (CA).

Meanwhile, the Vice President of Nepali Congress (NC) and the Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel said that the Nepali Congress should be given the second choice in power sharing, as it was the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly.

Poudel called for unity between the democratic and leftist forces to steer Nepal out of the current crisis, Nepalnews reported.

Responsibility lies with Maoists for political solutions in Nepal, says Koirala

Kathmandu, July 12 (ANI): Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said
that the Maoists being the biggest party in the Constituent Assembly, should take responsibility for finding solutions to the latest political developments, including formation of a new government .

Addressing a function organised here on Friday, Koirala said: " It is the responsibility of the Maoists to give political outlet in Nepal."

Koirala, however, said that he is ready to play the role of a facilitator and help the Maoists bail the country out of its current political deadlock.

Expressing hope for a new government being in place soon, Koirala said that the Maoist leadership should come up with a clear policy on all aspects of national development.

Earlier, Koirala held separate meetings with the leaders of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) and Terai Madhes Loktantric Party (TMLP) to discuss the political deadlock that has developed after their boycott of Constituent Assembly (CA) proceeding on Wednesday in protest against the Fifth Amendment in the interim constitution.

The Fifth Amendment will allow the formation of the government through a simple majority. It will also allow the Constituent Assembly (CA) to elect the president and the vice president through simple majority.

Koirala first met TMLP chairman Mahanta Thakur asked him and his party leaders not to obstruct CA proceeding or boycott it.

Koirala also said that the government and the major political parties were very serious about resolving the problem facing the Madhes, and advised him to move forward in consensus with all the parties concerned to end the current deadlock, Nepalnews reported. (ANI)
